I was new to this venue. I've been to many a gig in London but never at the O2 Academy in Islington so I was keen to see what it was like.
Sadly, we missed opening act LOST IN THOUGHT, although did hear good things about their set. Thankfully though we caught SERENITY. I was looking forward to seeing them as I am a relatively new convert to their cause but am very much liking what I hear.
And SERENITY did not disappoint! This band has power, melody, harmony and song writing skills to get them to, and then keep them right at the top of their game. And in singer Georg Neuhauser, they have both a front man and a damn fine singer too!
To crown their excellent set, they were joined onstage by the lovely Lisa Middelhauve (ex Xandria), who showed anyone who didn't already know, that she is still a force, and a VOICE to be reckoned with.
The lights dimmed and to the thunderous appreciation of the audience (myself included) headliners DELAIN took the stage. What seemed like a million mobile phones flashed, and then did it again when singer Charlotte Wessels joined her bandmates. DELAIN set about the audience with little mercy, drummer Sander Zoer pounding out each song impressively, expertly utilising precise and driving double kick-drums when called upon to do so. New guitarist Timo Somers sported an almost constant grin, launching into the set as if he'd played the songs all his life, while exchanging headbangs, and occasionally places, with bassist Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije; the latter's mass of hair whirling about impressively.
Classics like Sever, April Rain, Go Away, Virtue and Vice and Stay Forever had the audience singing, jumping, swaying and headbanging, despite the rather packed house, all overseen by a relaxed and smiling Martijn Westerholt, from behind his keyboards.
Easing into a mini acoustic set halfway through, they delivered amongst others, a personal favourite of mine 'Start Swimming'. Two new tracks were aired; singer Charlotte Wessels exclaiming that these tunes were 'so new they did not yet have titles'.
The Gathering, from their first album 'Lucidity' saw the audience and then Charlotte singing the part originally dealt with by Nightwish's bassist/vocalist Marco Hietala. I came away singing this, and I still have it in my head three days later.
A first class gig from a first class band. Roll on the new album and the next tour!
