A rather short, 76 year old black man has a predominantly white middle-aged audience in eating out of the palm of his hand. The house is full, and rightly so, for he is the greatest living Jamaican musician, period.
He is, as is to be expected, as nutty a box of frogs, he rants on between tunes in an undecipherable patois, just the odd words can be made out “Coxsone” and “Marley” feature.
As for the performance, I would rate this as “good” rather than the “excellent” as it was last year. Is it age catching up in the Upsetter? I think not.
I am going to be a little critical of the “band”, if you want to call them that. There is a old Rasta proverb that says Reggae Bass players should not be using a Steinberger Bass; but a more traditional 4 string instrument with a head. I suspect family man Barrett would not use such a thing.
A little practice goes a long way; generally you don’t hear the bass player swear at the keyboard player, I guess they just lost their composure in the presence of the great man.
That aside, a very good performance, the highlight being, as Scratch would put it “the fish” or Roast Fish and Corn Bread to you. A great tune done very well.
So the question we must ask, how long can he go on for? I don’t see him doing a “Pope” and stepping down while he can still breath, and I for one will be a fan until the end.
