Outstanding German artist

Herbert Gronemeyer is one of my favourite German singers and songwriters, so as a German expat living in London, I was super excited to learn he'd be performing in one of London's greatest venues! Unfortunately, I wasn't quite aware of just how muc he was trying to promote his English album - fair enough, given the concert was at an international venue, but after all, 90% of the audience was German-speaking and bases on their reaction had similar hopes to mine, being to hear the hits he is most famous for - in German. All in all a great voice, amazing songs (although in English), all very well - just a notch beside my expectation?

"English Herbert" was a hugh disappointment

The Roundhouse was filled with 99% Germans, who wanted to see their Herbert and listen to his German songs. Herbert refused to sing in German and tortured our ears with horrible English translations of his outstanding German lyrics. Translating "Flugzeuge in meinem Bauch" into "airplanes in my head" and totally loosing the meaning of "Schmetterlinge im Bauch" ---- oh my god. Herbert ignored the audience and we had to listen to his dreadful German accent all night

HG was ignorant. 90% of the mass was German and wanted to hear at least one full German song. yet, even after the mass was already shouting "in German" constantly, he would not respond to the wishes

This was the first time I saw Gronemeyer performing live! I was very excited about the concert and the venue and it was fabulous to be able to get so close to him, really great. He is an excellent musician and singer and he must have put a lot of effort into the translation of many of his songs. I very much liked his new love song! But...I was also very dissapointed! I guess that at least 70% of the audience were expatriates from Germany or Germans living in London. They came to the Roundhouse because they expected some songs in German language, not only English songs!

The mother tongue is the language of our soul, thus music does not create the same emotions in a different language even if it is the same music! To say it in different words: Groenemeyer's songs in English are not Groenemeyer's songs in German - the message doesn't reach your soul even if you understand it! I think he rather lost some fans that night...just 2 or 3 more songs in German would have made such a difference - a real pity!

A special occasion, but an opportunity missed?

It is of course a rare and exceptional occasion to be able to hear Grönemeyer in London, but the largely German audience were pretty disappointed that the overwhelming majority of his material at this concert was sung in English, whether newer songs or the English versions of some of his classics – and made their vocal displeasure quite clear! All respect for Herbert's adopted city and for his latest English album notwithstanding, and even acknowledging the fact that the electricity here was never going to compare to one of the artist's German concerts, many people left feeling a bit underwhelmed. Equally though, I can't be the only person who slightly regrets not making more of an effort with his English songs beforehand – I might have got more out of the concert if I had, and will endeavour to rectify the situation now. But let's face it, "Mensch" or "Flugzeuge im Bauch" in English isn't the same. You have to "recommend" an artist of this calibre, but some more compromise might have been in order on this occasion – surely even Grönemeyer's English fans are more familiar with his German material?

I dont know what this was...Herbert seems to attempt an international career and oddly translated all his songs into English. That sounded just weird. The audience made themselves heard and shouted "sing in German" after every song.

Better see him in Germany, Herbert singing his German songs in English is just ridiculous. IT DOES NOT WORK.
