Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros have no equal. A truly unique attraction, you'll see and hear nothing else like them.
At Manchester Cathedral they were on magnificent form, in an amazing space, to deliver an unforgettable performance.
The ambience of the Cathedral's vast ceilings and coloured glass seemed to be a perfect setting for their joyful, uplifting music and country/gospel harmonic vocals. And yet in spite of this vast space the gig was intimate. Even emotional.
Banter about "vanilla lighting", singing "Happy Birthday" to Orpheo, Alex climbing down from the stage to dance amongst the crowd, or an impromptu vocal rendition of "Lean on Me" at the end when sound curfew was broken - it felt as if you were included as a band member.
Though 'Cathedral' comes from the Latin for 'Seat', this was an all-standing venue and I think it suited the jubilant, bouncing audience just fine.
Some minor sound issues prevented the show from being the complete magical experience.
But it didn't matter.
Overall Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros were enthralling and charismatic. Beautiful voices, beautiful songs, beautiful faces.
They brought some much needed West Coast sunniness to the dreary Manchester summer.
If you get chance to see them LIVE in your city - DO IT.
