HBE performed competantly if not brilliantly. It was a fun evening with some tuneful songs, though it did not quite get my feet moving. Balance between the different instruments needed better balance and perhaps the smaller venue (Jazz cafe) not ideal, but worse I think was the vocal to instrument balance. Lack of vocals/rapping, did not spoil the evening.
Could have been a great evening had it not been for this, but i would still rate this as good. Strange we can't (in the UK) come up with a Brass Band Boy Band! as this mix seems to work quite well.
Sounds a bit negative but saying I felt they weren't on the stage too long must mean they were good enough to want to hear more.

Absolutely amazing. I'd been waiting to see them for a while and it was completely worth it. Amazing performance and the group were really down to earth and friendly as I got a chance to meet many of them before and after the show. Can't wait for their next London gig, I'll be there!

What a gig!!! Thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of this gig! Very very talented ensemble. Friendly chaps! GREAT music. Especially love "War" song. I've only recently been introduced to them and can't wait to purchase their albums! Looking forward to their future gigs in London!

Not bad music...one member of the band drenched a girl in water...he looked extremely stoned.... these guys would be better received in the states than here I think as they seemed a bit cheesey... their music is better recorded than live....

One of my favourite acts around, this was a solid gig and the performance was comparable to other big names in this genre - e.g. Hot 8 Brass Band. The similarity in sound between studio-perfect recordings and live renditions is impressive. They're tight and clearly the family bond shows in how they perform. My only quibble was that the inclusion of ad-libbed rapping didn't do much to bolster the performance. Bottom line - they're not very good at rapping. It gets (some of) the ground going, but honestly, the vocals aren't there. Less would have been more. Still though, a very enjoyable night from an excitable and exciting band.

HBE was amazing! Just fantastic from start to finish. The tunes were hypnotic; the rhythms, the harmonies, the Bass, the co-ordinated swings, the audience participation ....
if you get the chance to see them; crawl over glass, run through a minefield, climb an electrified fence .... do whatever but get a ticket and see this truly awesome band!!

Whether it's down to sheer laziness or a student/credit crunch ridden bank account, I'm a bad one for having a plan of going somewhere and then bailing on myself for no reason. I came close to this while attempting to buy tickets for the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. 'Ticket Scotland' looked at me like I'd asked them for a badger sandwich when I asked about tickets which I saw advertised in The Skinny, so I very nearly let it slip past, yet again.
I am so glad I didn't this time.
Having caught my interest on the radio - then to be followed by a necessary look-up on myspace and spotify, of course - I decided to buy tickets. They are from Chicago afterall, might be a while until they're back.
A completely varied crowd, the place was absolutely packed - we were lucky enough to hold our ground at the front of the crowd. Over 2 hours of waiting for them to come onstage was quickly forgotten because the show they put on was incredible. Their energy, vibrant personalities and real, raw talent completely stunned me and it wasn't difficult to let go, dance and feel the music as much as they clearly do. They are just 9 guys, loving playing excellent, self-composed brass funk (and the occassional rap song thrown in there too) and happily sharing it with people with an equal passion for brass. Their banter was amazing - total champions.

I'm always wary when I attend a gig by chance, having not heard any music from the artist in question. So when 10 guys bounced on stage, brass instruments reflecting the stage lights, and announed they were here to "make some motherfucking noise"... well I was even more confused.
Then they started to play and it all clicked into place.
Underpinned by heavy hiphop influenced beats (delivered from an American Euphonium), the trombones and trumpets soon picked out some ... yeah.. hypnotic melodies. As the band members sway and spin in time to the music, it's hard not to match their movements.
But the real key to their live act was the interaction with the audience, whipping us up between tracks, call outs and yells, reminded us that these guys know how to party, and when they started dropping lyrics the place went nuts.
Having such a hugely enthusiastic band, producing a boom, throbbing groove in such a small place is always a recipe for success and all too soon they were finishing up.
DEFINITELY one to catch live.

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble at Oran Mor. doors opened at 7.30. Band came on at 9.40. They performed with enthusiasm and played their instruments really well, but all the music sounded very similar. The rapping was great and the crowd were carried along with the mood. They stopped at 10.40. Disappointing as we stood waiting for longer than they performed.
