After an interesting if somewhat disjointed opening set from the cock n bull kid, straight away, i was pleasantly surprised with the intro of a man dressing in a tux and face mask introducing Janaelle.
After this, on the screen behind, Ms Monae herself appeared dressed as she is on the cover of the Archandroid album with a spoken word intro.
This launched into the fantastic Dance or Die, followed swiftly by Faster and Locked inside as on the album. She appeared halfway through the first song after coming out with druids dressed the same as her.

With a fantastic voice and amazing band to match, she captivated all. By the time the 1st 3 songs were over and a guitar solo, it was time to mesmerize yet again with her voice, covering Smile - a Charlie Chaplin favourite.

Mushrooms and Roses went down a treat with its psychadelic grooves and a startling cape worn by Janaelle.

One of the highlights of the show was Wonderland, followed by Cold war and tightrope.
Expertly played and energetic, this was a superb display or technical brilliance and great songs. Plus some balloons for the audience to play with,

For the encore, there was some great audience participation with crowd being asked to all sit down during the breakdown,

Excellent backdrops, brilliant band, some art (a painting by JM during the set given away to a birthday member of the audience), excellent props (balloons, cloaks and capes)

So all in all, good fun, great show and a major talent to look for in the future!

What can i say AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!! The music was so brill and the things on stage were ace. The band were funky and got everyone going also loved the final bit of the show when everyone was made to kneel on the floor while singing back to Janelle. Would DEFO GO AGAIN.

She and her band KNOW how to put on a show! It was brilliant, and I wish she had perfromed Neon Valley Street as well. It was interactive, fun and lively. I also liked that they didn't take long breaks. I would definitely see her again.

When a load of the audience stays after the gig dancing and throwing ticker tape at each other, you know its been an amazing gig. JM is incredibly talented, the stage show is wonderfully choreographed, the band and backing singers get involved. Janelle Monae rocks!

Without a doubt the best gig I have ever been to. The whole set was astonishing from start to end. The props were breathtaking, but the overall enthusiasm is second to nothing that I have ever experienced anywhere!! Each and every person on stage was phenomenal

Quite simply, THE BEST gig I have been to. EVER. Amazing, innovative, a true performer, well worth the money and the only artist to ever make me get down on the floor. Literally!! I'll definitely be watching for her next UK tour.

OMG i loved every bit of it expert that this guy kept getting in the way when i wanted to take a picture. i would love to do it again next time i would like to get an picture with her. But i wasn't bored one bit she had so much energy, the dancer were on point and of course with me screaming my head off made it more fun loool

I must say I am a huge fan of Janelle so much so I have brought her albums twice both a hard copy and digital copies. However I was a little disappointed with the overall performance. Janelle has such an amazing voice however the whole performance was jolted by a failure on the venues part to ensure the display at the back of the stage worked correctly!! The display was clearly going to be a huge part of the show and an integral part of the so called 'experience' Janelle wanted to present however when it didnt work the show became very ordinary and Janelle was clearly and rightly upset however I have seen mistakes happen in shows before but it doesnt have to ruin the show. Next the power went out on the lead guitarists equipment just before his solo and from then on this set the tone for the evening which even 45 minutes later Janelle was still affected by as she covered 'All I do' a classic by the great Stevie Wonder and she forgot the words!!
I think Janelle was the victim of her own thoughts as I feel she may have over thought the show so much that when it did not go exactly the way she planned she found it difficult to recover. I look forward to seeing her again at a bigger venue when she is a much bigger and more established artist although I fear with the style and realness of her music she may never reach enough people who would appreciate and put their hands in their pockets to fill a bigger arena. (That last line was my little rant about the state of the music industry at the moment :)

Fantastic gig, really enjoyable and what a talent she seems to be. A little bit short and some songs and jams 'milked' a little bit as..well...she only has so much material. Great interaction with the crowd at the end...although her painting skills do leave a lot to be desired...

Incredible energy, great voice, fantastic performer, quirky as hell and has real affinity with the crowd. Couldn't have asked for any more, really.

I hadn't heard any of Janelle Monae's music except "tightrope" it was my boyfriend who wanted to go. So really I didnt know what to expect. It wasnt a gig it was a performance. The whole show had the audiance captivated from the start, really professional, different and a wide range of songs. She is stunning and all of them have SO much energy it is amazing. I doubt very much we will ever be able to see her again in such an intimate venue or for that price!

Possibly one of the best gigs I've ever experienced. Everything from her voice to her band to the background visuals was FANTASTIC. Everyone on stage gave it their all and the audience got to be a part of it too.

Only negative is having to wait for her to return!

Unbelievable. I had incredibly high expectations going in, but she surpassed them all without effort. The band was great. The set moved along perfectly, with incredible precision and energy in the music and performance. Janelle is frighteningly beautiful, in looks, talent, clothes, charisma and gusto. When she slowed the gig down to sing 'Smile' with only the guitarist onstage, she demonstrated her beautiful, controlled and picturesque voice. Chillz! If you can see her, DO!

This was one of the best shows I've ever been to. She's amazing to look at and her voice is stunning. Loved the dancers and the band who really worked the crowd and the audience was as diverse as her music. This was pure energy from start to finish 100% commitment to put on a real show.

As a huge fan of James Brown, Michael Jackson, Prince, Marvin Gaye and all the motown stuff I was so exicted to see janelle monae perfom.
I came early, around 6.00p.m, the show was SUPPOSE to start at 6.30 but instead the we get in at 7.00p.m.
During the show i was standing at the front row !!!!!! Near the left speaker unfortunately.
Now let's get this clear right away, i'm not saying that janelle monae was bad, no she was brillant , fantastic, as i excepted her to be and yes I would recommend to a friend this event BUT NOT at the birmingham HMV institut.
The live sound engineer is the WORST live sound engineer i've EVER heard.
I'm a music technology student so i know what i'm talking about.
The mix was awful I could barely hear kellindo parker (janelle monae's guitarist) solo.
or the keyboard player.
There were all overshadowed by the drums or/and janelle voice.
There was something with that left speaker and i was not the only one to noticed it
I was half deaf at the end of the show, i was hearing a hight picth noise, like a ringing bell in my ear.
I could still hear that really annoying noise in my ear the day after show.

Janelle monae was incredible but next time i'll go and see her in another place

Janelle Monae was absolutely brilliant, fantastic show, amazing energetic band, Janelle looked beautiful and what a brilliant dancer she is....just loved it.

Also we had a great view which helped as being small I usually get to see the tops of their heads, ....if I'm lucky!
