In much stronger voice than at her last Jazz Cafe appearance some two (or was it three?) years ago, Mavis Staples presented her magnificent new album 'You Are Not Alone' with full-blooded support from such luminaries as Rick Holmstrom and Jeff Turmes and strong vocal back-up including her loyal sister Yvonne. Now in her seventies, and the greatest living embodiment of Chicago gospel/soul, she happily shows no sign of slowing down, and the set included a sublimely rousing performance of 'Creep Along Moses' and a marvellously touching solo version of Randy Newman's 'Losing You'. Nobody in the packed audience will I think ever forget her touchingly affectionate anecdotes (and impression) of the Revd. Gary Davis who died as long ago as 1972, or her stirring concluding version of the timeless Staples Singers standard 'I'll Take You There'. One truly hopes she knows how grateful we are to have her with us, and going from strength to strength.
