After a good Vietnamese supper amid the warm steady rain on the way to a dark and humid JAZZ CAFE, we we were so ready for Os Mutantes' unique Tropicalia rhythmns that we arrived almost before anyone else! Only a few moistened people came along in the seemingly interminable hour after the doors opened, and I began to wonder if the audience would ever reach critical mass. No need to worry, but to pass the time I transcribed the set list from the on-stage laptop as follows below. Not sure they played all of these but we were not disappointed, as the band seemed to adjust the length and reprise elements of their show to the audience reaction each song produced. For those unfamiliar with Mutantes, their influences from and on the artists mentioned in the JAZZ CAFE blurb were correct. In addition, I don't know if they would be flattered, but I was occasionally reminded of others at an early peak in 1969 including the Bonzos and the first generation Mothers - but with added steaminess as befits the Camden tropical hot dog night. As Sergio remarked during one of his sizzling guitar solos: 'Foxy!'.....although he may have been referring to his dynamic lead singer.
